Moving In and Getting Settled

COVID-19 Information for Housing

Welcome Bobcats! We are looking forward to your arrival on campus this August. We have been tirelessly working to make sure your move-in experience is as smooth and safe as possible during these unusual times.

Below is information regarding move-in as well as how we are changing our policies and procedures in order to keep our Bobcat family safe. Make sure to keep checking back as we further develop these plans.

Daily Welfare Checks

Residents will be encouraged to conduct a self-assessment each day for symptoms of COVID-19 before starting their day. The Department of Housing and Residential Life (DHRL) will provide each resident with a "self-care reminder card" during move-in that they may use to review their general health each morning, prior to going to class or work.

If any symptoms are present, students will be encouraged to contact the Student Health Center to schedule a TeleHealth appointment for evaluation and possible testing.

Residence Directors (RDs) and Resident Assistants (RAs) will be encouraged to check in with students if there are any health concerns.



High touch areas in community bathrooms, lobbies, open areas, study rooms, public restrooms, and kitchens will be disinfected twice daily, Monday-Friday, per Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations.

The new cleaning schedule for these areas (excluding community bathrooms) will be 8:15 – 10:00 a.m. and again between 1:15 – 3:00 p.m. during the weekdays. Community restrooms will be disinfected between 10:15 a.m. and 12:00 noon and then again between 1:15 – 4:30 p.m.

Bathrooms inside student rooms and suites will no longer be cleaned monthly by custodial staff in order to limit staff entry into student living spaces. One deep cleaning of these bathrooms will be completed by staff over winter break.

Tersano Lottus Pro-Aqeous Ozone is the non-toxic disinfectant cleaning system that will be used for these cleanings and it poses no risk to students. It will be used in daily disinfecting, mopping, wiping down high touch areas such as push bars, door handles and knobs, countertops, elevator buttons, etc.

For disinfecting and sanitizing bathrooms, Diversey Virex 256 will be used.


Community Spaces

All public spaces will have occupancy signage available to indicate the maximum number of people who may occupy that space at any given time. Excess furniture has been removed and spaces have been reconfigured to avoid unintentional over-occupancy.

Stoves and ovens in community kitchens will remain in service, but all ice machines, microwaves, and refrigerators will be removed or disconnected. Students will be allowed one small microwave (.7 cu. ft.) and one mini refrigerator (2.5 cu. ft.) in their room. Students are required to bring a surge protection extension cord for these items in order to use them. Click here for more details about this policy.

Equipment typically available for check out at the reception desk in each residence hall (including board games, cooking equipment, brooms, mops, etc.) will not be made available for check out. Students are encouraged to bring their own items.


Reporting of COVID-19

Students experiencing COVID-19 symptoms will be referred to the Student Health Center (SHC) for assessment. Students should call the SHC for a pre-screening and SHC staff will determine what action should be taken.



All of the halls will have signage detailing proper hand washing and social distancing as well as encouraging face coverings and daily welfare checks. There will also be signage listing the symptoms of COVID-19 to help residents identify any issues.



In order to accommodate our Bobcats and their guests, while safely practicing social distancing, Move-In will take place over four days—Sunday, August 16 through Wednesday, August 19. Incoming students will be required to sign up for a specific arrival appointment online. Students will be limited to bringing two adult guests (over the age of 16) with them at move-in.

Specific arrival appointments have been identified that will allow residents to check-in directly to their hall in small groups. The University Events Center and Strahan Arena will not be utilized during the 2020 Move-In in process in order to limit interactions. There will be 16 30-minute arrival appointments available in each hall based on that hall’s occupancy. This will help to control the amount of traffic in each hall and ensure proper physical distance is maintained.

To keep our staff healthy and our residents safe, we are requiring all employees to conduct a self-assessment for symptoms of COVID-19 before the start of their workday. Staff will be provided with a "self-care reminder card" that they will use to review their general health at home, each morning, prior to coming to work.


Work Environment

Central Administrative Staff and Department of Housing & Residential Life Building

All guests who wish to visit our office are required to wear face coverings.

All full-time staff members have an individual office or cubicle to ensure that social distancing is possible. Student employees will be given individual workspaces located in areas where distancing is physically possible or where plexiglass or dividers will be added. Additionally all staff are required to wear face coverings when not in a private office or cubicle work space.

The Department of Housing and Residential Life's (DHRL) lobby has been reconfigured and plexiglass has been added to the front desk reception area.

The model room located in our office is still open. Guests will not be allowed inside but can view the room in its entirety from the entrance. A staff member will be inside the model room to help answer any questions.

High frequency areas, such as the reception desk, will be wiped down after each visitor using a spray bottle of disinfectant.


 Residence Directors, Individual Residence Halls, and Bobcat Village 

All Residence Directors (RDs) have an individual office. Resident Assistants (RAs) are assigned to a single room in their hall to enable 1-1 conversations with their residents, and with appropriate distancing.

Residence Hall reception desks and mail rooms have been reconfigured to accommodate social distancing. Plexiglass separators are provided for students to seek assistance with safety in mind. No more than two staff members are allowed behind the desk at any time. All reception desks will be provided with cleaning supplies for daily disinfecting. Additionally all staff are required to wear face coverings when not in a private office or assigned work space.

Areas such as public lounges, lobbies, study rooms, and meeting rooms have also been reconfigured for occupancy with appropriate reduction of furniture and capacity signage.


Facilities Staff

Facilities staff will be wearing face coverings at all times when in buildings.

Work teams will meet independently at the beginning of their shift to keep groups smaller than 10. Supervisors will be conduct welfare checks for their employees at the start of each shift.

Staff will disinfect public, high-touch areas 2-3 times a day and disinfect other public areas in the morning and afternoon. All soap and hand sanitizer dispensers will be checked daily and fully stocked.

Only one staff member will be working in a room or unit at a time. Employees will use proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and maintain distancing as much as possible. If physically distancing is not possible or a job requires more than one person, then employees will use face coverings. One employee per vehicle when possible and staff will be required to wear face coverings when not.



Full-time staff will be provided with computers and USB camera/mics for teleconferencing and working remotely to ensure safety. All shared equipment will be thoroughly sanitized between usage.

In addition to the University’s document, “Underlying Guiding Principles that Apply to All Settings”, all residents are expected to obey the following guidelines while inside the residence halls or any other university building.


Face Coverings

Face Coverings are required in all public spaces—lobbies, lounges, study rooms, seminar rooms, kitchen/kitchenettes, etc. Students are not required to wear a face covering while in their bedroom or suite unless an outsider is present, such as a guest or staff member. Residents will be informed beforehand when an authorized staff member is required to be present in their room, suite, or apartment. If the resident cannot find their face covering, Department of Housing and Residential Life (DHRL) staff will provide a temporary one.


Staff and Student Care

To provide increased care, concern, and safety measures, here are some guidelines we will be following:

  • Per CDC guidelines, staff entry into student rooms will be reduced.
  • Staff will have recommended face coverings, or Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required, when entering student rooms.
  • Staff will not enter a student’s room if they are unable to maintain appropriate distancing due to additional students being present.
  • Asking residents about their health before entering a student room; being empathetic as well as giving students an opportunity to indicate if they have any COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Asking residents if they would prefer to wait outside or down the hall while staff is working. If a resident chooses to remain in room, the resident will need to wear their face covering while we perform service and maintain 6 feet of distance.
  • Staff will disinfect their work areas before and after their shift.
  • If a student is not present, a “we were here” notice will be left that indicates a disinfection was done as well as any repairs.


Guests and Visitation

We understand that residents want to have their family and friends visit, unfortunately, given the current COVID-19 situation we must restrict our visitation policy for everyone’s safety. Residents will need to abide by the following policies:

  • No overnight guests will be allowed.
  • Each resident is limited to only one guest within their assigned room or in the residence hall or apartment complex (except for Move-In week). 
  • Guests within a shared room, suite, or apartment must be agreed upon by all roommates (if applicable).
  • Guests are only allowed during the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 midnight.
  • Guests are required to wear a face covering whenever in any public space.
  • Residents musts always escort their guest.
  • Residents and guests must adhere to all policies, procedures, expectations, and guidelines issued by Texas State University.
  • Individuals who fail to comply with this policy may have their privilege of hosting a guest revoked.
  • Repeated violation of this policy may result in the individual housing contract being considered for cancellation.


What Residents May Bring for Move-In

With the removal of community microwaves and refrigerators, and to limit possible exposure, we have updated our policy on microwaves and refrigerators in the residence halls. Students will be allowed to bring:

  • Microwave oven—one per resident with a size limitation of .7 cu. ft. and 700-watt max.
  • Refrigerator—each resident may bring one 2.5 cu. ft. refrigerator OR two residents may share a 4.6 cu. ft. refrigerator.
  • Surge Protection Extension Cords—if a resident chooses to bring a microwave or refrigerator, they are required to use a power strip that includes surge protection in order to reduce electrical outages.

To minimize occupancy, maximize social distancing, and to increase student’s ability to have an “exit” plan, no additional furniture will be permitted inside student rooms, suites, or apartments. This includes sofas, futons, and large game devices such as foosball tables, etc.

Building Access

Residents are required to use their student ID card to gain access to their residence hall. The main access doors of the residence halls will always be locked, except for a 2-3 hour window Monday-Saturday to allow for mail and package delivery.


Additional Provisions

Spray bottles of the Tersano Lottus Pro-Aqueous Ozone cleaner will be provided in community kitchens and study rooms with instructions encouraging students to actively participate in their own wellbeing by spraying and wiping down surfaces before and after use. This is a way that students may contribute to the safety of themselves and other community members.

Hand sanitizer stations are provided in every residence hall entry area and will be maintained daily to ensure product is available for student use as they enter and exit the facility.

In order to accommodate our Bobcats and their guests, while safely practicing social distancing, Move-In will take place over four days. There will be an opportunity for you to sign up for a specific Move-In arrival appointment online. 

It’s important to us to keep everyone safe and so we appreciate your patience as we continue to improve our Move-In process. 


Move-In Arrival Appointments

There will be 16 30-minute arrival appointments each move-in day for each residence hall and apartment.

You will be able to sign up for a specific move-in arrival appointment online through our StarRez Housing Portal based on the last two digits of your student ID number. Your ID number starts with "A0" and is followed by seven digits. Use this and the schedule below:

Wednesday, July 1 ID #'s ending in 00-19
Thursday, July 2 ID #'s ending in 20-39
Monday, July 6 ID #'s ending in 40-59
Tuesday, July 7 ID #'s ending in 60-79
Wednesday, July 8 ID #'s ending in 80-99

If you are unable to sign up on your date as indicated above, you will be able to sign up any time starting on July 9, 2020.


Guests During Move-In

Moving in and getting settled into your new place can be a lot of fun. To ensure everyone has a safe experience and to accommodate for social distancing students will be limited to bringing two adult guests (16 years or older) with them at move-in.


We know that decorating your room is one of the best things about living on campus. Review the list below for items that are allowed in your room and some that should be left at home. Consult with your roommate to help coordinate who brings what.

Moving carts will not be available for use during move-in; we encourage you to bring a small hand cart, dolly, or other moving equipment for assistance.

Early Arrivals

Early arrivals are select groups of students such as student athletes, strutters, and university band. These students are part of sponsored University groups and will be notified via their Texas State email address.


Late Arrivals

Please claim your space by Sunday, August 23, 2020, to avoid losing your space. If you are unable to check in by August 23, 2020, please contact our office at 512.245.4663 or

First day of class is Monday, August 24, 2020.


Mail & Packages

Please do not ship personal items to your hall before move-in.
