2010-2011 University Housing Policy

The Department of Housing and Residential Life (DHRL) at Texas State University-San Marcos supports the academic mission of the university by providing students with a safe, comfortable and convenient living environment, while offering opportunities for increased campus involvement, social interaction and academic assistance.

In anticipation of continued increases in the enrolled freshmen population, the DHRL conducted a study to determine if housing would still be available for the sophomore class. As a result of this study, the department received approval from the President’s Cabinet to temporarily adjust the university housing policy for 2010-2011.

The adjusted policy will require students under the age of 20 with fewer than 30 credit hours (by September 1, 2010, for fall admission or January 1, 2011 for spring admission) to live in on-campus university housing. All students who graduated from high school within the preceding 12 months of the semester of their admission are also required to live on campus.

Currently enrolled students under the age of 20 who have not achieved 30 credits by September 1st of 2010 will still be required to live on campus.  All students who are required to live on campus must either make on-campus housing arrangements or seek a formal exemption from the requirement prior to their registration for fall 2010. Download the Exemption from University Housing Residency Requirement Request Form to submit a request.

All other current housing residents who have met the required age and credit levels will not be required to live on campus.   With limited space available, a lottery system is currently being developed for those students who want to continue living on campus but are exempt from housing requirements.  Approximately 15% of the available spaces in the Texas State University residence halls and Bobcat Village Apartments will be made available to current residents who no longer are required to reside on campus on a space-available basis.

A task force, comprised of representatives from the Residence Hall Association, Housing Student Staff Council, and administrative staff from Housing and Residential Life, is currently meeting to fully develop the lottery system and communication plan. The Department of Housing and Residential Life is also reviewing long-range plans for renovation of existing housing and possible construction of new housing.
