Housing Procedures

Students should be aware of important procedures regarding housing at Texas State. These requirements are in place to ensure all students are accomodated in a fair and efficent manner. Forms and contracts related to the procedures below can be found on our forms page.

Assignments
Housing assignments are made on a first-come, first-served basis. The Department of Housing and Residential Life (DHRL) begins accepting contracts in October for the following school year. The first assignments will be released in May. Assignments will be emailed to students.

Check-In
Prior to fall move-in, visit the DHRL Web page dedicated to move-in for important times and information.

Checkout
To check out, residents must meet with a staff member, return the room/apartment key and leave a forwarding address. Residence hall/apartment parking permits must be returned or exchanged with Parking Services. Failure to return or exchange a parking permit could mean that the vehicle will be placed on the impound list and could be towed if found on campus.

Contracts
Housing contracts must be completed by any student required to live on campus (housing policy). These contracts are binding for an entire academic year.

Contract Cancellation (for new students no longer attending Texas State)
Incoming students who choose not to attend Texas State after having submitted a contract are eligible to withdraw. For consideration, please complete this form.

Contract Release (for current students requesting to break contract)
The housing contract is legally binding for the entire academic year. Exceptions may be granted in exteme circumstances such as withdrawal from the university, graduation or student teaching.

Contract Terms & Renewal
Students living on-campus during the spring semester will be given priority in renewing their housing contract for the next year. The renewal period is typically February through April.

Exemption Request
The university housing policy requires that students under 21 with less than 52 hours live in a residence hall. Certain exceptions such as commuting from within 60 miles, marital status, etc. do apply. For exemption consideration, please submit this form to DHRL. We require five to ten working days to process a request. Medically-based requests may take up to 15 days. Only admitted students may submit an exemption request.

Exemption Request-Based on Summer Hours
This form is for returning students required to live on campus that will meet the 52 hour minimum after completing summer courses before the first day of fall classes. Repeated classes do not count toward your total credit hours. This form must be submitted with a housing contract.

Room Consolidation Process – Residence Halls
Student room rates are based upon the expectation that each room will have two occupants. Students who do not have a roommate in the first three weeks of the semester must participate in a room consolidation process. During this consolidation, students will have the option to rent their room as a private room for an additional fee. For those students not desiring a private room, the residence director will consolidate them with other students in the building who do not have roommates. If a student is not consolidated, DHRL retains the rights to the space within the room and can use it without notice. The other half of the room (bed, dresser, closet, etc.) must remain clear and be ready to accept a roommate at any time.
