Residential College

Residential College programs have been a staple of higher education throughout the world since the 13th century. These unique learning communities historically offered residential dwellings where university students and faculty live, dine, socialize and learn together. This concept prestigious institutions such as Yale, Harvard and William and Mary universities before making its way into the public higher education system.

At Texas State, the Residential College program began in 1995 in Beretta and Brogdon Halls. By 1997, the program expanded to a third residence hall, Butler. Residents are block enrolled in core-level classes with their hall mates. This increases the likelihood of study groups, note sharing and leads to lasting friendships within these halls. This program is open to all majors.

"The best part of the Residential College is the community that people build within the hall. Just being able to know and interact with people in your class because you already live with them is exciting. I have met friends and companions that I believe will last a lifetime."-Jarvis Clark (class of 2002), Houston, TX

"I have a 3.5 GPA and many wonderful friends. I don't think any of it would have been possible, at least not easy, had it not been for the Residential College. It allowed me to grow academically, socially and personally, while directing me towards my new collegiate lifestyle." -Erich Fisher (class of 2002), Spring, TX

He or she encourages course participation outside the classroom to increase student learning. Faculty regularly dine with students, attend hall programs and serce as mentors and role models. While sophomores in the Residential College program block enroll in courses in Fine Arts, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and elective courses, freshman enroll in the following courses.

Residential College students develop a strong sense of community through floor and hall activities. Incoming Residential College freshmen must complete 10 hours of service learning and attend four programs. Returning students must complete 20 hours of service learning and attend four programs.

Service Learning
Residential College offers its residents the opportunity to learn outside the classroom. Some of the educational programs and volunteer service events offered in past years include "Meet the Professor Dinner," "Battle of the Sexes," "Hunger and Homeless Week: Canned Food Drive," "Hall Government Fall Campout" and "Do you Tattoo?"

Many freshmen request mentors from a list of second year Residential College students. With the encouragement of mentors, residence directors, resident assistants, professors and the rest of the Residential College staff, students participate in activities such as Texas State homecoming, intramural sports and hall government.
