Residential College programs have been a staple of higher education since the 13th century. These unique communities historically offered accommodations where students and faculty live, dine, socialize and learn together. This concept flourished at prestigious institutions such as Yale, Harvard and William & Mary universities before making its way into the public higher education system.
The Texas State Residential College program began in 1995 in Beretta and Brogdon Halls. By 1997, the program expanded to a third residence hall, Butler. Beginning in the fall of 2009, the Butler Residential College will move to the newly renovated LaurelHall.
This program is open to all incoming freshmen (regardless of major) and is known for its co-enrolled courses which allows students to attend certain classes with their hall mates. Participants are also asked to participate in a co-curricular initiative to increase involvement in the community and on campus.
