Learning Communities (formerly known at Texas State as "FIGs" or "Freshman Interest Groups") are for students who have declared certain majors or who are enrolled in certain programs at Texas State.
A Learning Community consists of a group of students and their peer assistant who live in the same residence hall. These communities help students to graduate from college by increasing the involvement and connection between academia and student services. The environment offers peer and faculty mentoring, shared classes and study groups; as well as educational and professional development activities. Co-enrolled courses are offered for students in most Learning Communities.
Peer Assistants
Each Learning Community is led by an upperclassman peer assistant (PA). He or she is a student staff member of the Department of Housing and Residential Life whose duties include serving as the advisor, counselor, friend, resource and facilitator for the group. PAs plan educational activities for their Learning Community.
Learning Outcomes
Students in Learning Communities will cultivate close and productive relationships with peers, mentors and faculty to create a community of engaged learners.
Students in Learning Communities will utilize their common interests through their peer assistant to become actively invested in academic departments, campus life and career goals.
